Easy Apple Crumble: The Recipe I Wrote Left-Handed at 11
Share
In home ec, we had to write every recipe we made into a book. The week we made apple crumble, I had a broken right arm, so I wrote the whole thing out with my left hand.
I think I actually did quite well.

I still make this apple crumble today. It's simple, it uses pantry staples, and it's hard to get wrong. Here it is, typed up and ready to bake.
Apple Crumble
Prep: 15 to 20 minutes | Bake: 40 to 45 minutes | Fits a 9-inch pie dish
Topping
- 1 cup (120g) all-purpose or whole wheat flour
- ⅛ tsp salt
- 3½ tbsp (50g) butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
Filling
- 1 lb (about 500g) baking apples, like Granny Smith
- 2 tbsp granulated or brown sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)
- ¼ cup water
To make
- Heat your oven to 375°F and grease a 9-inch pie dish.
- Topping: Mix the flour and salt. Rub or cut in the butter, then mix in the sugar.
- Filling: Quarter and core the apples, and peel them if you like. Slice them into the pie dish. Mix the sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle it over the apples, then add the water.
- Cover with the topping.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the apples are soft and the topping is crisp and golden brown.
- Serve hot with cream, custard or vanilla ice cream.
I hope you love this as much as we do.
